Confessions of a 30yr Old on Snapchat

Snapchat, I went there.

I never really got the point of snapchat but after getting told that snapchat is EVERYWHERE and if you’re a social media administrator in any form you need to be on it, well I downloaded it.

After the download and set-up, I had no idea had to use this thing. It was embarrassing. I had to get a 12yr old to explain it to me and show me how to use it. Seriously.

However, after “I” figured it out, I’m mildly addicted. I’m not entirely sure what it is. Maybe it’s the expectation that what you post doesn’t last forever so it can just be a silly or boring moment. Maybe it’s the lack of pressure to have beautiful content like on Instagram. Maybe it’s because the way I am able to read the news is interactive, quick, and appealing. Or maybe it’s just because it’s FUN!

[For all you snap chatters out there I know you're saying "late to the party". So this post isn't for you, however share on the bottom why you love the snap, I'm curious.]

The daily changing filters, the random (very random) pics I’m getting sent from friends is hysterical and puts a smile on my face in the middle of the day, and the face swap feature has finally proven that my husband does indeed look like Mark Wahlberg. [see above] And I can’t even get into the geofilters and discovery channels without making this post extremely too long.

I’ve only been active on the snap for 5 days now, but I have to say, it’s my new favorite thing and according to information derived [from sources: U.S. Census—Projections of the Population by Sex and Age for the United States: 2015 to 2060; comScore mobiLens February 2015; Snapchat internal data] …

More than 60% of U.S.13 to 34 year-old smartphone users are Snapchatters.

So, it seems that while our culture is still driven by social media our tastes are changing.

We are choosing the ability to more closely pick and choose which parts of our days we share with others and who we share them with. Our news and current event intake is on the other side of the transition from hour-long news specials to video clips and short articles. We view events in real-time, as they happen, whether or not we were invited to the Correspondent’s Dinner or Collegiate Accapella Nationals. (Both of which I caught up with on Snapchat by the way.)

Snapchat is a screen shot of how our connections, content sharing, advertising, and media consumption will be taking place in the next 5-10 years, so face swap with your bestie and get on board the puppy train.
