Reducing Gender Bias in the Hiring Process

Who is most likely to commit gender bias in the hiring process? Would it surprise you if I said we all have the tendency to commit this act?

Gender bias in the hiring process is not new. However, it does seem to be getting the attention it finally deserves.

If you think you organization is safe from gender bias, you may be looking at your team with rose colored glasses.

Everyone has the capability of committing gender bias. And, the hiring process is a prime target for gender bias to rear its ugly head.

Why should your small business or non-profit care about gender bias?

It can perpetuate stereotypes. It continues the gender wage gap pattern. And, it can keep your company from hiring the individual best for the job.

The good news? Though we all have it within us to commit gender bias, we can learn the signs and take steps to reduce gender bias in our hiring process.

In this short presentation for Gonzaga University, I share:

  • WHAT IS GENDER BIAS
  • WHY ADDRESSING GENDER BIAS IS IMPORTANT
  • HOW TO IDENTITY GENDER BIAS
  • HOW TO REDUCE GENDER BIAS

It’s easy to feel defensive when presented with ways our organizations may be excluding people in our communities.

But, I encourage you to embrace these conversations.

By taking steps towards inclusion, your organization is opening itself up to a wide range of potential hires with great potential.
